Androstenedione

Androstenedione is secreted predominantly by the adrenal gland and production is partly controlled by ACTH. It is also produced ACTH-independent in the testes and ovaries from adrenal-secreted DHEA-S.

Androstenedione is a crucial sex-steroid precursor. Androstenedione is used for diagnosis and differential diagnosis of hyperandrogenism, diagnosis of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), monitoring CAH treatment, diagnosis of premature adrenarche.
