Hepatitis A is transmitted through contaminated food and water or through direct contact with an infectious person and is one of the most frequent causes of foodborne infection. Although infection with the hepatitis A virus does not cause chronic liver disease, it can cause debilitating symptoms and acute liver failure, which is often fatal.
